Tips on How to Design a Flower Garden

Imagine you are a novice in gardening and you feel the passion to grow flowers in your yard and need to know how to design a flower garden or a vegetable plot. All you have to do is to consider these factors before you start digging in your yard and growing plants.

The first thing you have to consider is the size of your yard. Does it have enough space for all the plants you want to grow? If you have a small yard (which is about 400-600 sq. ft.), you can opt for aerial plants that can be hung or placed on walls. You can also use raised beds for plants that do not require much space. You may want to avoid plants that require a wide space to make room for other plants. You will not have much problems if you have adequate space in your yard. You only have to worry about growing a lot of plants to make it look good.

Another factor to consider is the type of soil you have in your yard. If you are unfortunate enough to have barren soil, you can cultivate other types and place them in pots. Keep in mind that not all flowers grow on the same kind of soil. Some will live and be healthy on silt or clay soil, while some would only blossom and last on loamy or peaty type of soil.

You should also consider the type of flower in your garden. There are several websites and books on how to create a garden that also specify every plant species for each type. There are basically three types of flowers.

Perennials – The life cycle of these plants can last to three years and beyond. These plants grow in spring or summer, die in fall and winter, and then grow back again during warm seasons.

Annuals – From the term itself, annuals only have a lifespan of a year or a season, usually spring or summer. Petunias and impatiens are the most popular annuals.

Biennials – These plants only have a life cycle of two years. In the first year, the plant grows leaves, roots, and stems and eventually dies after they sprout seeds or fruit. Parsley is a perfect example of a biennial.

Gardening can be fun, depending on your patience. If you know how to design a flower garden, you should also consider the types of flowers that would grow in your yard. You can pay your neighbors’ yards a visit to know better or look for gardening experts.
